Anime Central took place from April 27-29th at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare and Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont Illinois. The con featured many Japanese and American guests such as Masashi Hamauzu(Final Fantasy X composer) and Cristina Vee. (voice actress known for her work as Noel in Blazblue) They also had a huge array of fan run panels. The one that I attended on Friday night was the ‘Lets Play Oregon Trail Pannel’, an 18+ pannel where the hosts call up four people from the audience to play Oregon trail while taking challenges related to anime to advance the game. I heard some interesting things from friends at Uni and decided to check it out. The hosts had lots of energy and keep the crowd entertained throughout the panel.
On Saturday I went to the Angelic Pretty and Hungry and Angry fashion shows. Angelic Pretty is a line of Lolita style clothing and Hungry and Angry was more of a punk style. Both shows showcased colorful outfits some of which have never been shown to the public before.
Acen’s dealers hall and artist alley is one of the biggest in country, filled with a diverse array of booths. One artist was doing a $4 chibi deal at their booth so I commissioned them for one. I also found a few of the artists I follow on deviantart in the alley and bought a few prints from them. The coolest thing I bought in the dealers hall was a set a Portal cookie cutters, originally found on Thinkgeek.com.
No convention would be complete without a masquerade, which sadly was interrupted before it even started by someone pulling the fire alarm, causing the entire group of people inside the hotel to evacuate outside. The masquerade still went on after that, but the skits had to be canceled because of loss of time. Still, the walks in the masquerade were all very well done.
All in all, Anime Central was a very lovely con despite the mishap on Saturday before the masquerade. I’ll be going back next year for sure.
I am traveling to Baltimore in July for Otakon so be sure to look for my con report!
